Spanish Immersion + Volunteer Experience in Puerto Rico

 

 

Experience the satisfaction of helping reconstruct communities in Puerto Rico which were devastated by Hurricane María.  Join  Sagrado's Spanish Immersion + Volunteer Experience in Puerto Rico this summer.  

In this active-learning course, you will combine classroom instruction in conversational Spanish (for academic credit), with the opportunity to practice the language while helping a community in need.

 

SUMMER 2018 SESSIONS

SESSION 1 (LIMITED TO 30 PARTICIPANTS)

  • Classes start Monday June 4th, end Friday June 22nd
  • On-campus conversational Spanish: M-F 7:30-10:20am
  • ESP 191. SPANISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE I.  Practical study of the basic grammar structures essential to learn Spanish as a second language. The course provides students with the opportunity to learn the Spanish language through the study of grammatical structures and basic vocabulary. Topics from Hispanic Caribbean and Hispanic American culture. First Level. (3 credits) (For details of the course click here.)
  • Off-campus volunteering: (varies by week)

 

SESSION 2 (LIMITED TO 30 PARTICIPANTS)

  • Classes start Wednesday June 27th, end Thursday July 19th
  • On-campus conversational Spanish: M-F 1:30-4:20am
  • ESP 193. SPANISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE II. Practice study of the basic grammar structures essential to learn Spanish as a second language. The course provides students with the opportunity to learn the Spanish language through the study of grammar structures and basic vocabulary. Topics from Hispanic Caribbean and Hispanic American culture. Second Level. (3 credits) (For details of the course click here.)

Some of the volunteering opportunities:

  • Assist rural communities reconstruct their homes.
  • Volunteer in the replanting of trees and recovery of eco-systems.
  • Help with clean-up and restoration of beaches.
  • Tutor grade-school children from affected communities.
  • Assist with community outreach on energy conservation techniques and  in renewable (solar) energy alternatives.

SAGRADO HOUSING:

Sagrado offers the option of summer housing for participants in the programs, based on the alternatives below:

$35/night (w/o bed clothing) and $42/night (w/ bed clothing).

TUITION, FEES & HOUSING COSTS:

The 3-week-long Spanish Immersion program grants 3 credits from Sagrado Corazón University in Conversational Spanish, and up to 25 certified hours of volunteer work.  

Tuition + volunteer fees per session is $800.  (You may choose to stay for both sessions, a total of 7 consecutive weeks, for a reduced tuition+fees of $1,500).  

Volunteer Only service fee per session is $300.  (You may choose to do volunteer work on both sessions, a total of 7 consecutive weeks, for a reduced volunteer only fee of $550).
